What Should I Eat While Running?
When running, it's always important to stay fuelled to ensure that athletes do not run out of energy mid-stride. The greatest source of energy for runners, however, has to be carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose before entering the bloodstream and fuelling the body. It takes around 500g of carbohydrates to fill an athlete's glycogen stores, which will then fuel the runner for around 60-90 minutes, depending on heart rate. As a result of this, it is recommended that runners running for longer than 60 minutes should aim for an additional 30-60g of carbs per hour for the first three hours, with this increasing from there on.
